Lake Dora in Tavares, Florida was awash in vintage and classic race boats for the Classic Race Boat Association’s Spring Thunder Regatta this past weekend. The three-day event saw all classes of race boats from small vintage outboards all the way up to high performance hydroplanes from all over the country running  heats on a one mile course throughout the three-day event. Spectators could sit in bleachers or in their own chairs or blankets on the banks of Lake Dora and enjoy the beautiful boats as they raced by. Between heats seaplanes would come and go from the docks and spectators could take in the action in the pits by watching the launching and retrieval of boats by trailer and crane. There was also a field of dreams area with a collection of boats on trailers and some were even for sale. Just outside of the gates of the race was a well attended car show along with a steam train running people up and down the track that runs along the lake shore.

It was a fun weekend with some spectacular boats that not only look good sitting on their trailers, but that can run at incredible speeds. Don’t let them get away from you. If you can, plan to attend one fo the upcoming regattas put on by CRA. you won’t regret it.  Here is their site to check out their upcoming calendar, http://www.classicraceboatassoc.com/
